Top 5 Tuesday: Top 5 Surprising Reads of 2019!

Hello friends and fellow book lovers! For December, Shanah kind of went with a 2019 reflection theme and I really enjoy that. For the first one of December, it’s surprising reads of 2019 and honestly, I had a handful of them. Maybe it was a different genre or subgenre in romance or an author, but I’m excited to talk about them!

5. Get a Life, Chloe Brown

The first book I put on this list might not be a surprise since I love romance. Even though I’ve heard a lot of people talk about it, I didn’t think it was too hyped. Once my hold came off at the library though, I absolutely fell in love with this story. I was surprised at both how quickly I read it and how much I enjoyed it. This is a romance between our MC Chloe Brown and the guy who works at her building which is equal parts sweet and steamy. Honestly, this book surprised me so much that it might end up on my Top 5 books of the year list. Considering that I read it at the end of November, that’s pretty good.

4. Always Never Yours

Next up is a YA book and that’s Always Never Yours. This book follows a girl who basically just dates guys and never commits. It’s basically her finding love and realizing that maybe she’s not the problem. Overall, I thought this book was really good considering that I didn’t have high expectations going into it. Regardless, it was still an amazing read and easily one of my YA reads of the year. Maybe it’s because the MC is unapologetically herself or that’s it’s super unique in its subject but this book was a major surprise.

3. Getting Schooled

This book was a surprise for an entirely different reason. Earlier this year, I was looking for a book on audio to read during Smut-A-Thon. I wasn’t sure if this one was sexy so I skipped over it but I eventually went back to it. I found it on hoopla and started listening which I immediately fell in love with. This book is a hate-to-love romance between a student and a graduate assistant and honestly, it blew me away. While it was a relatively short audiobook, it had well-developed characters, a swoon-worthy romance and was just fun. I’m glad that I decided to pick this up randomly because it ended up introducing me to the rest of the series as well.

2. Fit

This was another book that I saw randomly and decided to pick up. I’ve heard of Rebekah Weatherspoon but never picked up her books. Once again, I decided to pick this one up after Smuthathon and what an amazing idea I had. This book was a major surprise for me as I didn’t know it was going to have a fat MC but also that it surprised me by making me fall in love with Rebekah Weatherspoon’s books. Since then, I’ve read this entire series, the books in the Loose Ends series, her Sugar Baby series and I plan on reading the rest of her backlist in 2020. Overall, this was a major surprise as I came to love this author a ton.

1. Her Royal Highness

For the most part, I like royal romances but I didn’t exactly love Prince Charming by Rachel Hawkins which is the first book in this series. That being said, I was a bit skeptical when it came to picking up this book. However, this one ended up being a major surprise for me as I LOVED it. Maybe it’s because the book seemed to have more character development or that the book was just better in general. Regardless, this book was a major surprise for me as someone who has rarely read YA this year.
