My Life

Hello 2019, Goodbye 2018 or my goals posts

Hello friends and fellow book lovers! Last year, I made multiple sets of goals and looking back, I’m not sure I fulfilled any of them. Either way, it’s time to look back and see if I succeeded. I’m also going to talk about my goals for 2019 and maybe, I’ll actually achieve something on my new list.

Without further ado, let’s get into my 2018 goals and see what I achieved. Even if I didn’t, it’s good to look back and see my plans from the beginning of the year. I guess I’m hopeful but also dreading this. Let’s start before I change my mind.

2018 Goals Check-In

Writing Goals 2018

  • Participate in Nano: This was a big fat no and I think I was a little too overconfident in myself with this one. Right now, my focus is on my article writing rather than my fiction writing. I’m not going to beat myself up too much with this one because I did a lot of writing this year. (0/1)
  • Narrow down the topics for my NFL book: Like I mentioned, my focus was solely on my article writing. I did devote some time to this but not much. I still do plan on writing about the NFL in book form but it’s way too early to try and figure out anything concrete. (0/2)
  • Find a writing buddy: Lol what??? I think this was based on a fiction project because I already have someone reading/editing my articles. Honestly (0/3)
  • To improve my grammar: Finally, one I actually achieved. I’ve been using Grammarly to help with my writing and I think it’s worked for me. I can see myself improving little by little so I consider this one a success. (1/4) Let’s just pretend I didn’t set writing goals for myself and move on lol.

Reading Goals 2018

  • Read the entire Harry Potter series: Yes! I actually did this one and I’m pretty darn proud of myself. It took me a few months but I was able to get through the entire series. After seeing all the hype, this was huge for me. (1/1)
  • Set a Goodreads goal of 150 books: I’m not sure why I didn’t do this but I set my goal for 150 books. When I’m writing this post (12/1), I’ve read 140 books so we’ll see if I end up reading 150 books before the end of the year. (1/2)
  • Read at least 10 non-fiction books: Yes!!!!! This was a goal I was dead set on achieving and I did it. If I remember counting correctly, I read 12 non-fiction books this year so I’m really happy! (2/3)
  • Start and finish at least 2 series: I think I achieved this one. I finished the entire Harry Potter series and I also finished the Grip series by Kennedy Ryan. I’m almost done with the Wild Seasons series too so I’m giving this one to myself lol. (3/4)

Blogging Goals 2018

  • Introduce 2 new series on my blog: Sadly, I only introduced one new series on my blog and that’s “My Favorite.” Technically, it wasn’t mine to start with but I’m not going to beat myself up. I like the schedule I have for my blog. (0/1)
  • Branch out with my content: I guess I kind of did this. I started doing non-bookish favorites and have done some non-bookish “My Favorite” posts so I’ll give this to myself lol. (1/2)
  • Reach 200 followers: Um???? I’m almost at 500 followers when I’m typing this which I can’t believe. I still can’t believe my blog has grown this much and people actually want to see my posts or talk to me??? (2/3)

I’m not featuring life goals this year so I’m skipping that section and I don’t think I have many writing goals, either. I think I’m in a good place with my writing now and I’m hoping I can catch a break soon. If not, then it’s just not meant to be…yet 😉

Goals for 2019

Reading Goals 2019

  • Go on a book-buying ban: I’ve kind of already set this goal for myself. This goal is mostly based on my enjoyment of the books I read in 2018. I only want to buy books I’m going to read, love and want to read again. I think I was a little cavalier and I want to be a bit stricter with my reading.
  • Read 15 non-fiction books: Last year, I set a goal of 10 non-fiction books and I ended up reading 12. This year, I upped my goal to 15 books and I’m hoping I can do that with ease. 🙂
  • Fully embrace audiobooks: This year, I dipped my toe and tried audiobooks. Sadly, the service I used ended up basically lying to everyone. In 2019, I plan on listening to more audiobooks and hopefully, splitting my reading 50-50 between audio and physical but we’ll see about that.
  • Finish The Lunar Chronicles series: In 2018, I read Cinder and never picked any of the other books up. In 2019, I’d like to continue and finish the series. I think Ellyn and I discussed reading it together at one point so maybe reading it together will motivate me.
  • Participate in at least 3 read-a-thons: This year, I participated in 3 read-a-thons, 1 of which was my own. I also participated in the Contemporary-A-Thon and the Nightmare Before Book Princess Review Read-a-Thon. I love read-a-thons and I can’t wait to see which ones 2019 bring.

Blogging Goals 2018

  • Blog makeover: I’ve pretty much had the same theme since I started my blog and I want to try something new. My friend Ericka and I will probably work together on it so I won’t be just doing it alone so fingers crossed on that one!
  • That’s basically my only goal for 2018 as I really like how my blog is going 🙂

I had such a fun yet productive 2018 so I’m excited to see what 2019 has for me. At this point, I’m really happy with how my blog is growing, the content I’m featuring and the reading I’m doing. I can only hope 2019 is as good to me in terms of blogging and reading. 🙂

My Life

Fall Non-Bookish Favorites

Hello friends and fellow book lovers! Lately, I’ve been slacking when it comes to my non-bookish faves. In all honesty, I don’t end up having many non-bookish favorites in each month. All I usually do is read, write and watch Youtube so instead, I’m going to make my non-bookish favorites seasonal. It will be a lot easier to me and I don’t have to post it as frequently.

I’ll probably end up doing it every 2 months or so. As always, I have to give credit to Kristin. I got the idea from her and I love seeing her monthly non-bookish favorites so let’s get into my non-bookish favorites for September & October.

Before I get started, I didn’t watch many movies this month. I’m going to be skipping movies and get straight into TV.

TV

Bob’s Burgers season 9

At the end of September, season 9 of Bob’s Burgers premiered. I’ve been recapping since it started and thus watching each episode. So far, I’ve really been enjoying the season. I don’t want to give it a solid grade yet, but it’s been a pretty good season.

Over The Garden Wall

My cousin let me use her Hulu and let me tell you, I’m taking advantage of it. One of the first shows I binge-watched was Over the Garden Wall. I’ve heard about this show for a while but I never watched it and I’m so happy I did. It was the perfect autumnal watch as it was set during Halloween, had some spooky moments and was incredibly atmospheric.

I’m just mad that I waited this long to watch it. At its core, it’s a story about two brothers and their relationship. I also binge-watched it in all in one sitting so it’s great for those chilly fall nights.

Golden Girls

Another show I’ve bingeing on Hulu is Golden Girls. I watched reruns of this when I was young but haven’t thought about watching it until recently. Right now, I’m only on season 2 but I love it so much. I can’t believe I slept on this show for so long.

Granted, some of the jokes and references are definitely dated. It’s also cleared geared at an older white audience. However, it has already dealt with some progressive topics for a show created in the 1980’s including sexual harassment and LGBT+ relationships. I have high hopes for the rest of the series. 🙂

Music

I don’t have specific artists this month so I’m just going to include songs!

Misc Faves

Binging with Babish

I’ve been subscribed to Andrew aka Binging with Babish for a while. Recently, he’s been putting up weekly videos and I’ve loved every single one of them. One of my recent faves is his King of the Hill special where he featured a few of Peggy Hill’s famous recipes. It was such a fun way to pay homage to the show.

Challenge Accepted series by Tastemade

One of my new favorite series on Youtube is called Challenge Accepted. Usually, it’s where a member of the Tastemade staff has to eat 3 meals a day for a week from a certain place. There was also one where the girl cooked only 3-ingredient meals for 3 days straight. Each week, I look forward to which restaurant they’re going to try and how many different combinations they come up with.

Witches

My last fall favorite is witches. For some reason, I’ve really been loving witches this year whether it’s in live-action films, cartoons or books. I know I shouldn’t mention books but I had to make my point! My boyfriend also keeps referring to me as a witch which is true enough lol.

Traveling

In October, I took a train to visit my friends and we had a girls weekend. It was a lot of fun and it made me want to travel more. If anything, it proved how much I was sleeping on trains. Trains are such an easy and relatively inexpensive mode of travel. It was only 2 hours and for the most part, was very quiet. I especially loved being able to just zone out and travel without any cares really.

What were some of your fall non-bookish favorites? I might have missed a couple but oh well!

My Life

August Non-Bookish Favorites

Hello friends and fellow book lovers! After skipping out on July, I’m back with my non-bookish favorites for August. Since I had a lot going on this month, it’s going to be a pretty long list. Well, I hope so but it all depends on what I can remember. That seems to be my problem every month 😛

I’d also like to give a nod to Kristin. She’s the reason why I started this so be sure to check her out!

Movies

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

I feel like the last person to mention this on my blog. However, I really enjoyed the Netflix adaptation of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. It was incredibly solid and it felt like the characters were everything I pictured in my head. I’ve only watched it once but I’m already down for a rewatch.

TV Shows

The Venture Brothers

In August, season 7 of The Venture Brothers premiered on Adult Swim. While I don’t believe I watched season 6, I was really excited about it. I think I have a pretty good handle on the show and what’s going on. That being said, I love watching the show and the direction it’s going in now. It’s definitely a show I look to watching each week and do so religiously.

Hulu

My cousin is letting me use her Hulu account and I’m loving it. I’ve been binge-watching a few shows including Bob’s Burgers and Harvey Birdman. However, I’m excited to binge some older shows and maybe discover some new ones.

Music

Ariana Grande

THE QUEEN IS BACK. Queen Ariana Grande released her album this month and I live and die by it. I enjoyed both of the singles: No Tears Left to Cry and God Is A Woman. I think her album is a bit different but is still good. She’s easily one of my favorite artists right now and she just keeps getting better.

Jordan Davis

Another one of my faves this month is Jordan Davis. I’ve been listening to his album on and off since it came off. Lately, I’ve been gravitating more to his songs and they’re so much fun. Right now, my favorite is Slow Dance in A Parking Lot but I also enjoy Dreamed You Did and Selfish.

Some of my other favorite songs are

  • Vanilla Twilight-Owl City
  • Radio-Hot Chelle Rae
  • If We Were A Movie-Hannah Montana
  • Hooked-Dylan Scott

Misc Faves

New Hair, New Me

Right after my birthday, I dyed my hair. I wanted to freshen it up a little bit and go a little darker for fall. Instead of it being a lighter brown, it’s now a “deep rich brown.” It’s a little different without being too dramatic. Honestly, it’s exactly what I had in mind.

My Birthday

I turned 25 on August 15th and it was such a good birthday. Even though I wasn’t with my boyfriend, I still felt the love from him, my family and friends. It was kind of low-key but the older I get, the more I prefer a birthday like that 🙂

Thrifting

Originally when I thought my boyfriend was coming in September, I wanted to get a few new outfits. Instead of going out to buy new things, I ended up going to a few thrift stores and found some cute things. I usually don’t thrift much or really clothes shop much but I love a good bargain.

Carrie Dayton

Speaking of thrifting, I almost forgot to mention a Youtuber I discovered. I’m not sure how I discovered Carrie Dayton’s channel but I’m obsessed. Most of her recent content focuses on being a “mid-size” girl and I fit into that category. It’s so refreshing to see someone my size or close to it, making content.

I especially love when she tries on clothes from different stores or goes thrifting. I think that’s why I was so inspired to go thrifting this month 🙂

Those are all my non-bookish faves for August (At least I think so!) What were some of your non-bookish fave for Augusts? Any recommendations for me to check out? 😀

My Favorite…Thing I Wish I Would Be Good At

Hello friends and fellow book lovers! Once again, I’m back with another “My Favorite” post and surprisingly, I’m growing to like this meme. It’s a really fun way to break up my bookish content and get a bit more personal on my blog. I promise this one won’t be as depressing as my previous week’s post lol.

I’m trying out “My Favorite,” a meme created by Maureen’s Books. I’m going to copy and paste what she posts before the master list: “My Favorite.. is a weekly meme hosted by Maureen’s Books that started on Wednesday January 4th 2017. In this meme we share every week something we love with each other. Because let’s face it.. The world can be a dark place and it’s to share something positive.

Each week I will post a new My Favorite.. post about one subject and I’ll tell you all about it. And the best part? Everyone is welcome to join. The only thing you’ll have to do is sign up on my weekly post, link back to this post and visit others. Feel free to use my My Favorite.. image or make your own.”

At first, I wasn’t sure what I was going to decide on for this prompt. After a few minutes of thinking, it came to me. It was right in front of my face and I didn’t even realize.

As much as I discuss planning and using a planner, I’m not that good at it. In fact, I kind of suck at it most days. When I buy a planner, I have every intention of using it and then I don’t? Maybe I’ll use it for a month or two but I end up giving up on it.

It’s such a bad habit, but something I can never keep up with. It’s the exact same way with journaling. For a few weeks, I kept a journal, answered prompts and then I put it down, haven’t picked it up in months. The same thing happened with my bullet journal, too.

I’m a huge planner and love having things organized, but I’m never good at keeping track of it? Hopefully, that makes sense lol.

My Favorite…Thing About 2018 So Far

Hello friends and fellow book lovers! It’s hard to believe it’s already August aka my birthday month. Usually, I’m pretty excited about my birthday but with my boyfriend’s visit still up in the air, I’m feeling less excited and more nervous. Anyways, enough of that depressing stuff!

The only thing you’ll have to do is sign up on my weekly post, link back to this post and visit others. Feel free to use my My Favorite.. image or make your own.”

This week’s prompt is your favorite thing about 2018 so far. Personally, I haven’t had the best 2018 as I’ve been working a ton, writing all the time and generally feel a mix of tired and frustrated. Honestly, this is the most depressing post, I’m sorry!

Anyways, one of my favorite things in 2018 has been podcasts. Most people might talk about a huge life event or something, but mine is podcasts. Either way, I’ve been branching out more with what I’ve listened to and have really enjoyed them. I’ve never been one to consistently listen to a certain podcast but I think I found two I really love.

I’ve talked about this one before but it’s Pod’s Burgers. I interviewed the sisters who host it and I really do love them. They talk really in-depth about the show, have a lot of fun jokes and are generally awesome people. If you’re a fan of the show, please please check them out! ❤

The other podcast I’ve been loving is called Drawn. It’s an animation podcast and is a collabration between HowStuffWorks and Cartoon Network. It’s such an interesting and refreshing look into the world of animation. I’ve only listened to a few episodes, but I’m hooked.

Now, I have a question for you guys! Do you listen to podcasts? If so, do you have any recommendations for me?

My Life

My Favorite…Dream Job

Hello friends and fellow book lovers! I can’t believe this is my last My Favorite post of July, where has the month gone? The closer we get to August, the closer we are to my birthday and my boyfriend’s visit. I feel like I mention him all the time, but that’s my BABY and I love him.

Anyways, in July, I’m trying out “My Favorite,” a meme created by Maureen’s Books. I’m going to copy and paste what she posts before the master list: “My Favorite.. is a weekly meme hosted by Maureen’s Books that started on Wednesday, January 4th, 2017. The only thing you’ll have to do is sign up on my weekly post, link back to this post and visit others. Feel free to use my My Favorite.. image or make your own.”

Dream job is a hard question for me to answer. I have a few answers for it honestly because being an English graduate is kind of an opening playing field. There’s a lot of different career paths I could go down and I have positive feelings about all of them.

My 1st one is to be a professional writer. In some ways, I already do this as I write for two different sites. While it doesn’t pay much, I’m passionate about what I’m writing about and hope to get discovered that way. So far nothing has happened but we’ll see.

My 2nd one is being an editorial assistant. I’ve applied for a few jobs like this, but haven’t heard back. I’m a little disappointed, but I’m trying not to get discouraged. I know it’s a tough business to break into, but I’m going to give it my best.

My 3rd one is being an event planner. This is the job my aunt just started and something I’ve become interested in. I think I could be a pretty good event planner as I’m organized, hate to spend money and I’m good with people.

Anyways, those are just some of my ideas. Also if anyone has any tips on breaking into these industries or finding a job, help a girl out!

My Favorite…Thing To Do First Thing In The Morning

Hello friends and fellow book lovers! It’s Wednesday and I’m once again, trying out the “My Favorite” meme for the month of July. So far, I’m enjoying it because it’s a fun post I can just throw together. Regardless, it’s been a fun time trying to come up with answers.

In July, I’m trying out “My Favorite,” a meme created by Maureen’s Books. I’m going to copy and paste what she posts before the master list: “My Favorite.. is a weekly meme hosted by Maureen’s Books that started on Wednesday, January 4th, 2017. In this meme, we share every week something we love with each other. Because let’s face it…The world can be a dark place and it’s to share something positive.

The only thing you’ll have to do is sign up on my weekly post, link back to this post and visit others. Feel free to use my My Favorite.. image or make your own.”

This week’s prompt is my favorite thing to do first thing in the morning. I’ll let this gif demonstrate how I feel about mornings.

So yes, I’m not a morning person. At my job, my schedule is always changing so I’m never sure what time I have to get up. Getting up at 5:30 am for a 6am shift is no fun, though!

Anyways, my favorite thing to do first in the morning is to check my emails. Usually, I shut off my alarm and scroll through my emails, respond to a text from my boyfriend and then start getting ready. Sometimes if I have time, I’ll scroll through some fellow bloggers post but I’m usually not awake enough for that.

However, checking my email is something I love doing in the morning. It kind of feels like I’m starting my day off on a productive note!

What’s your favorite thing to do first thing in the morning? Are you a morning person or do you dread them like I do?

My Life

June Non-Bookish Favorites

Hello friends and fellow book lovers! It’s time for one of my favorite posts to write and that’s my June Non-Bookish Favorites. As much as I love talking about books, I also enjoy talking about some of my other interest. This month, I have a pretty decent amount of favorites so let’s get into them!

Movies

Incredibles 2

This month, I went to the movies and saw Incredibles 2. After waiting 14 years, I can say this movie was worth the wait. I loved seeing all of my favorite characters again, being introduced to new ones and the movie in general. I’d highly recommend it 🙂

June also brought with it a ton of movie trailers I was excited for! I’ll include a few down below.

TV Shows

OK KO Let’s Be Heroes

One show I binge-watched this month was OK K.O. Let’s Be Heroes. It premiered on Cartoon Network in 2017 and I’ve heard pretty good things about it. After watching all of the episodes though, I can say it’s one of my new favorite cartoon shows.

It’s basically an action comedy about a hero named K.O and his two friends: Enid and Rad who work at a bodega. It reminds me a lot of Adventure Time as it’s light-hearted at times but also serious and covers some topics most kids shows would gloss over.

Music

Dan + Shay

Even though their album isn’t out yet, it will be when this post goes up. I’ve loved this country duo for years and have followed their career. Each time they release an album, it instantly becomes one of my favorites. Of all the singles they’ve released, I think I disliked one of them. I’m just excited to see how their self-titled album is 😀

Some of my other favorite songs are

  • This is America-Childish Gambino
  • Downtown’s Dead-Sam Hunt
  • Apeshit-The Carters

Misc Faves

A Gold Star

At work, they introduced this new “Rock Star” program. Apparently, the manager chose someone from the department who is dependable, respectful and a good employee. I was awarded one and now I have a gold star pin on my badge. I know it’s probably not a big deal, but I love it so much 🙂

Those are all my non-bookish faves for June! What were some of your non-bookish favorites for June? 🙂

My Life

My Favorite…Summer Time Memory

Hello friends and fellow book lovers! I’m back with another “My Favorite” post and I hope you’re all enjoying it as much as I do. Personally, I like trying to mix it up and have a bit of non-bookish stuff on my blog.

In July, I’m trying out “My Favorite,” a meme created by Maureen’s Books. I’m going to copy and paste what she posts before the master list: “My Favorite.. is a weekly meme hosted by Maureen’s Books that started on Wednesday January 4th 2017.

This week’s prompt is my favorite summertime memory. This is by far the easiest question as I thought of my answer immediately. If you can’t tell, I have a boyfriend who I love and adore. He deserves all good things in this world.

Anyways, my favorite summertime memory was getting to meet him. The trip started off a bit rocky with our flight being delayed, a long Uber ride and no Disney on day 1. After day 1, the trip was incredible and just getting to be with him was amazing. It’s like you imagine all these things in your mind and then they’re happening and you’re just so happy???

I can only hope September is every bit as magical. That being said, I had to include a picture to go along with my post!

What’s your favorite summertime memory? Also funny story: I wore that shirt all day without realizing you could see my bra through it. FAIL!

My Life

May Non-Bookish Favorites

Hello friends and fellow book lovers! This week, I’m coming at you with something different. Once again, I’m following Kristin’s lead and posting non-bookish favorites. I think it’s a really fun way to connect and not feature books all the time.

Everyone seemed to enjoy my post last month so I figured I’d give it another go. Without further ado, let’s talk about some of my non-bookish favorites for May!

Movies

This month, I have 2 movie favorites and they are connected. 🙂

Star Wars

This month, I have been firmly invested in Star Wars. With the release of a new movie (which I’ll talk about next!), I have been producing tons of content about it. I have truly taken a deep dive into the fandom and can’t find my way out.

Also I’m not above doing some self-promo so feel free to check out Star Wars: Celebrating the ladies in a galaxy far far away. It’s one of my favorite articles and one I really enjoyed writing. 🙂

Solo: A Star Wars Story

I was hyped for Solo and it sadly didn’t deliver. It was a decent movie, but nothing compared to what Star Wars has produced previously. My favorite thing was easily Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. AN ICON and the love of my life.

Either way, I enjoyed the movie for what it was. It was fun and that’s what I was looking for. 🙂

TV

Dear White People Vol 2

This month, I watched season 2 of Dear White People on Netflix. Season 2 really improved upon the first season. There was lots of character growth, new relationships, shocking revelations and a more realistic idea of what black college students deal with, on campus and offline. (At least I think so!)

The series also featured a lot of awesome cameos, an amazing last episode and just won me over again.

Bob’s Burgers

The season 8 finale of Bob’s Burgers airs this month and I’m sad but happy. I have loved the show for years but every season finale is bittersweet. Either way, I had fun covering it for Hidden Remote and I can’t wait for season 9!

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

Towards the end of May, Noelle Stevenson tweeted the first look of She-Ra and the Princess of Power. It’s a new Netflix reboot and I can’t be more excited about it. There’s no release date, but I’m excited that she’s working on it and Netflix is handling it!

Music

A huge music favorite this month was Kacey Musgraves. She released her new album, Golden Hour at the end of March and I just discovered it this month. I cannot stop listening to it and this girl does not have a bad song. My personal favorite is Wonder Woman but all the ones I’ve listened to, I’ve enjoyed it.

I’ve listened to her previous albums when they released and loved them, too. She’s such a breath of fresh air in the country music landscape and I suggest you check her out. She is exactly the kind of face we need in country music!

Kacey Musgraves is my main music favorites, but I’ve also continued to listen to Ed Sheeran along with Dustin Lynch and Sam Hunt. Guess May was a huge country music month for me!

Misc Faves

New laptop: Sadly, my old laptop started to die and the battery was going out. I called my brother and he helped me out a new one. It’s an HP laptop and it’s mint green. I love it so much and I’m so happy I bought it ❤

The Roundtable Youtube Channel: For those of you who don’t know, I love cartoons! I would rather watch cartoons than live-action TV or films. That being said, I have trouble finding Youtube channels that talk about cartoons critically or give good constructive criticism of cartoon fandom. Thankfully, I found The Roundtable which is 3 guys who have a channel devoted to that. Lately, I’ve fallen into a black hole on the channel and can’t stop watching them!

Those are all my non-bookish favorites for May! What were some of your non-bookish favorites from May? Any recommendations of things for me to check out? 😀
