October 2020 Wrap-Up including Scream-A-Thon

Hello friends and fellow book lovers! I’m currently on vacation when you’re reading this so I’m writing this a little bit early. However, I wanted to include my Scream-A-Thon bingo board. I already did a wrap-up for Graphics-A-Thon if you want to check that out so let’s get into my reads for Scream-A-Thon and all of the ones that didn’t fit on the bingo board.

Obviously I didn’t get a black-out board as I wanted but some of these prompts were hard to find books for. Plus I was in a major romance mood this month which isn’t a surprise. However, let’s get into my reads for Scream-A-thon and I can happily say that I’m pretty sure I got bingo 3 times. I would normally include the board but I’m at my man’s house and I don’t feel like trying to plug it in here so let’s pretend ๐Ÿ˜›

Wrong Number: Number in the Title

I talked about this one in my Graphics-A-Thon Wrap-up so you can see my thoughts. 4/5 stars

Making Popcorn: Food on the Cover

26805877. sx318

The next book I read for this was True Love and Candy Corn. This is a like 20-page novella about a girl who has a run-in with a witch who predicts who her true love will be. This is short and sweet and exactly what I wanted. I wouldn’t go into this expecting the world but it’s fun. 4/5 stars

Would You Settle for PG-13?: YA Book

38452936. sy475

This was another Graphics-A-Thon read so you can check out my wrap-up above. 3.5/5 stars

Gale Weathers: Unlikeable Character

51308201. sx318 sy475

When coming up with a book for this one, I knew I needed to read Scary, Lovesick, Foolish since Nora is a pretty unlikable character. In this book, she drops back into that persona and it becomes a hindrance in her relationship with Brendan. As much as I loved this one, my major issue was lack of communication. If the two just talked about their feelings with each other rather than other characters, it would have been much a much smoother story. Either way, it was a lot of fun. 4/5 stars

Deputy Dewey: A mystery with a clueless character

The next book I read was When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole. This is a thriller/mystery story but I don’t want to give too much away from it. I’ve heard that some have called it a mix of Rear Window and Get Out which is the perfect description for it. I won’t say anything else but it was solid. 3/5 stars

Don’t Blame the Movies: A book-to-movie adaptation

22554204. sy475

This was another Graphics-A-Thon read so you can check out my wrap-up. 4/5 stars

Mickey: Our Little Secret, Book with Mental Health Focus

Once again, this is another Graphics-A-Thon read so check out the wrap-up as mentioned before. 4/5 stars

Rules of the Sequel: Book with Gore

48510316. sy475

I picked this one up because it was KU. It’s a horror story featuring a cleaning lady going to an alternate world and it’s incredibly creepy. Once again, I don’t want to give too much away as I feel like this is better to go in not knowing much. Either way, it’s a spooky and haunting read that’s perfect for the Halloween season. 3.5/5 stars

Joel the Camera Man: Contemporary

50220418. sy475

For Contemporary, I picked up Well Played which is the second book in the Well Met series following Stacey from book 1. It’s her romance with someone and I won’t give it away. My main issue with this one was that I was incredibly bored while reading this and it had a trope I extremely dislike. Sadly, this was a huge disappointment. 3/5 stars

Headshot Just in Case: Book featuring the Undead

42508375. sy475

This was the first book I finished for Scream-A-Thon and it’s a super spooky novella which focuses on two childhood friends who are persuaded to hook up by a paranormal force. This was super short and smutty but ultimately, a bit weirder than I wanted it to be lmao. 3/5 stars

The Rules Don’t Apply: Standalone Within a Series

55024266. sy475

This was the first book in the Hot Halloween Nights series which is a series of standalone Halloween romances. This is another stereotypical predictable romance where it’s insta-lovey. I honestly don’t have much to say about this as I’ve read a lot of similar books. If you want a short Halloween romp, then check it out. 3/5 stars

Stab 3: Movie Magic, Book with Magical Elements

42593023. sy475

If you couldn’t guess, this was another Graphics-A-Thon read. I’ll link my wrap-up again if you haven’t check it out yet.

Maureen Prescott: Paranormal Book

The next book I finished was Watch Over Me by Nina LaCour. This book follows Mila who moves to a farm and ends up dealing with the trauma in her life. This book also has a paranormal element and it’s such a hauntingly beautiful story. This is obviously more character-driven as most of Nina LaCour’s stories are. Either way, I thought this was an excellent read. 4/5 stars

Woodsboro: Small Town Setting

48694922. sy475

For my next read, I went with Tikka Chance on Me because it’s a small-town romance between a waitress and the president of a motorcycle club. This book surprisingly had more depth than I thought. Ultimately though, it was pretty cheesy although the sex scenes were pretty great. 3/5 stars

Jill: World-Wide Sensation, Hyped Book

54594933. sy475

The book I chose for this one was Kissing the Coronavirus. This book is exactly what it sounds like as it’s about a girl who falls in love with the Coronavirus. This is absolutely bonkers and I don’t even have words for it. It’s like 16 pages so if you have KU, I’d recommend checking it out for a laugh. 2/5 stars

Stab-A-Thon: Reader’s Choice

25434361. sy475

For the Reader’s Choice, I just subbed in a book I read and that’s Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) in Song by Sara Bareilles. This book is just a short collection of essays about Sara’s life, career and fills in the gaps if you’re a fan of hers. Personally, I thought this was pretty good but not anything special. I do recommend the audiobook since she narrates it herself and sings during it. 3/5 stars

Scream: The TV Series, Read a spinoff book/series

33906101. sx318

If you couldn’t guess, this is a Graphics-A-Thon read so you can check out my wrap-up to hear about my feelings!

Now, I’m going to get into the non Scream-A-Thon reads and let me tell you, there are a lot of them lmao so buckle up!

18. Her Night with the Duke (Clandestine Affairs #1)

If you saw my library holds post, then you’ll know about this one. This is a forbidden historical romance between a widow and a duke who is going to marry her step-daughter. I enjoyed this one although I felt like the story was a bit too long and the conflicts just kept adding up. I just wanted these two to catch a break but it was still a solid read. 4/5 stars

53950329. sy475

19. Sweetest in the Gale (There’s Something About Marysburg #3)

This was another book I had on hold at the library and it’s book 3 in the There’s Something about Marysburg series. This book focuses on three separate couples and it’s basically short stories of their romances. It will make sense if you read the previous two books as these characters were side characters in those. It was fine but nothing overly memorable. 3/5 stars

53410266. sy475

20. Spoiler Alert

Speaking of Olivia Dade, I read her most recent release this month. This book is a romance between Marcus, an actor and April, a fan. Oddly enough, the two have a surprising connection but I won’t give it away. My major complaint with this was it felt like the fandom aspects weren’t explained fully and I was confused about characters/the world. I know it was all “made-up” but it was confusing as heck. However, the romance was cute so 4/5 stars

51003468. sy475

21. The Roommate

I wrote a review of this one so you can check that out if you want to know my thoughts.

42597921. sy475

22. A Tale of Two Cities: A Halloween Novella

This is the start of my Halloween romance binge so if you don’t like Halloween romances, skip ahead. This is a romance between two people in a wedding party who hook up during a Halloween joint bachelor/bachelorette party. I loved their romance, how sexy this was and that it was Black love. I only wish it had been longer but I don’t have much else to say. 4/5 stars

26700232. sy475

23. Lights Out

The next Halloween romance I picked up was Lights Out. This is a second-chance romance between two single parents who meet up after playing a game of “Lights Out” in high school. This was super cute, smutty and short. Easily one of my new favorite Halloween reads and I know I’ll revisit it next year. 4/5 stars

52943387. sx318 sy475

24. Riding His Broomstick

This is a romance between a girl who works at a company and the CEO. Both of them are virgins but it does feature that same “insta-love” trope. Super predictable but always reliable so I’m not mad at it. Once again, don’t have much else to say. 3/5 stars

55772254. sy475

25. Trick: An Erotic Novella (Halloween Stories Book 1)

This is a Halloween novella featuring Tyra and Denard who go out on a hay-ride date and things don’t go as planned. This is only 30 pages long so I won’t say anything about it but I LOVED it. It was short, smutty and fun…easily one of my new favorite Halloween reads. 5/5 stars

55772255. sy475

26. Treat: An Erotic Novella (Halloween Stories Book 2)

This is another short novella but this time, it’s about a Black couple who do some things to revive their relationship. It’s a lot of fun, super sexy and short so once again, I won’t give too much away. Once again, it’s another Halloween read I LOVED. 5/5 stars

55226013. sy475

27. You’re My Boo: A Friends-to-Lovers Halloween Romance

This is a friends-to-lovers romance between two childhood friends and it’s basically them taking the next step on Halloween. It’s super short and cheesy but nothing I can complain about. Either way, I’m not mad I read it. 3/5 stars

55528713. sy475

28. Taming Her Beast (Tiaras and Treats #1)

I was watching a liveshow and they did reading sprints so I decided to pick this one up. It’s another Halloween friends-to-lovers romance between Harry and Bella who dress up like Belle and the Beast. Once again, it’s another cheesy, short and cute read. I don’t really have much to say about it. 3/5 stars

55794006. sy475

29. Costume Cutty (Boos & Booze #1)

I saw this series was coming out the week of Halloween and I jumped on it. These are all short novellas set in Sapphire Springs and each one takes place during the Fall Festival with this one focusing on Dionne who is the event organizer having a romance with her ex’s neighbor. This is super short so I won’t give much away. However, I hated Dionne’s ex and I’m glad that he got the consequences he did. 4/5 stars

55808293. sy475

30. The Wrong Wicker (Boos & Booze #2)

The next book in the series focuses on Evie who recently moved to Sapphire Springs and attends the festival on a blind date but ends up connecting with someone else. This one is slightly shorter than the first novella but also features a unique twist with the character’s ex. Personally, I thought this was another solid addition and I can’t wait to read more of AshleyNicole’s backlist. 4/5 stars

55809541. sy475

31. The Stroke of Midnight (Boos & Booze #3)

Moving right along with this series, this book focuses on Imani who is dealing with the grief of losing her husband and possibly starting a new relationship. This book has a slightly paranormal twist which I enjoyed. Once again, short and steamy so I don’t have much else to say. 4/5 stars

55809528. sy475

32. Halloween Spice (Boos & Booze #4)

This is another novella set during this infamous party in Sapphire Springs and it follows a married couple who gets to have a little fun without their kids. This is probably my favorite of the bunch. 4/5 stars

55809534. sy475

33. Eerie Obsession (Boos & Booze #5)

Once again, this was another one in the Boos & Booze series and this one follows Summer who is look to embark on a new chapter after her divorce. Of course, there’s a romance but it also has a suspense element. This was another one I wasn’t in love with as I felt like it could have gone farther than it did. 3/5 stars

55809535. sy475

34.Brewing Storm (Boos & Booze #6)

This was the final book in this series and honestly, it wasn’t a favorite either. This one follows Seniyah who moves to Sapphire Springs for a fresh start and has a romance with an unlikely neighbor. This one felt a little bit too fast-paced for me and the story honestly felt a little boring. 3/5 stars

37781835. sx318

35. My Brother’s Husband, Volume 2

As for the final book I read in October, the hold I had on this finally came off and I read it in one sitting. As much as I adored the first volume in this series, I feel like this one lacked the magic of the first. Maybe it’s because we were used to the characters or that things felt pretty low-stakes. Either way, I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much. 4/5 stars

Even though this is a day late, I knew I still wanted to get it up. I’ve been on vacation at my SO’s house and he’s been treating me like a princess. Honestly, I haven’t been wanting to blog or get on the computer at all. Anyways, I wanted to tally up all of the books I read including Graphics-A-Thon so in October, I read a total of 45 books like that is WILD. Before you finish reading my post, please take the time to look over these attached links to help with Black Lives Matter.
