Mini Contemporary-A-Thon Reads
If you want to know my TBR, I’ll link it. Since it was just the weekend version, they included 3 challenges. You can find out all of the info about it on my TBR post. With that being said, let’s get into the books I read for this mini-round.
18. Giant Days Vol 5
For almost every single Contemporary-A-Thon round, I read one of the volumes of Giant Days. This round, it was volume 5 and it was enjoyable as always. This time, we’re following the group as they’re getting done with their freshman year, their summer adventures, and the start of their sophomore year. I don’t have much to say about this, but it was good.4/5 stars.
I read Giant Days Vol 5 for the prompt of “Read a book under 250 pages.”
19. Clap When You Land (🎧)
If you couldn’t tell, I really did deviate from my original TBR. I will say that my library was the main reason for this as 4 books I had on hold all came off. I’ve been hearing good things about Clap When You Land so I decided to pick it up. This book follows two girls who have the same father but don’t know about each other until his death. This book focuses a lot on grief, sisterhood, and realizing your parents are human.
Unfortunately, this book lacked the magic of her previous works. Maybe it’s because it took forever for the sisters to connect or for the action to start happening. While I enjoyed the book and the audio narration, it isn’t a new favorite. 4/5 stars
I read Clap When You Land for the prompt of “Read a book with peach/orange/pink on the cover.”
20. The Honey-Don’t List
The next book I read for this mini CAT is The Honey-Don’t List by Christina Lauren and what a book. This book follows two assistants who basically become babysitters for an HGTV couple and it’s basically following the two assistants having a relationship while their bosses’ marriage is imploding.
At first, I was really into this book and then about the 75% mark, things got a turn and it soured the book for me. It completely changed the tone of the book and completely disappointed me. While it’s not my favorite Christina Lauren book, I thought it still had some good parts. 3.5/5 stars.
I read The Honey Don’t List for the prompt of “Read a book you think will be fun.” (Not my type of fun but still counts! Lol)
21. Strictly Professional (Strictly Professional #1)
The next book I read is one that was actually on my TBR. This book follows Gabi and Terrence who meet at a bar, forming an instant connection. The next day, they find out they’re going to be co-workers and decide to just be friends. Romance obviously ensues and I think we all know where this story is going.
While I wanted to love this book, it felt like the story had a lot of unnecessary drama when I wanted a romance. While it was a solid romance, the drama made the story not as fun. 3/5 stars.
22. Grumpy Fake Boyfriend (Kwan Sisters #1)
The last book I read for Contemporary-A-Thon and for May was Grumpy Fake Boyfriend by Jackie Lau. I’ve never read anything by Jackie Lau and this certainly won’t be my last. This book is tropetastic as it features a girl fake-dating her brother’s best friend. Additionally, there’s forced proximity including bed-sharing and it’s just delightful.
Personally, I thought the ending was a little dramatic. Either way, it was still a cute and fun read. I’m now happy to say I’ve read a Jackie Lau book and I plan on reading more in the future. 4/5 stars.
