February 2019 Wrap-Up

Hello friends and fellow book lovers! This month’s wrap-up is a little bit different than the others. I participated in a read-a-thon this month and Contemporary-A-Thon got its own wrap-up. This is basically serving as a wrap-up for all the books I read outside of CAT and also includes my Feminist Lit February reads, too. Without further ado, let’s get into the books I read. 🙂

The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare: Finished January 30th. This was the only book I didn’t read in February but I already finished my January wrap-up so it’s here. I LOVED this book, there’s just something about this premise, the characters, and their romance. I devoured it in a day and I couldn’t stop swooning. I won’t give a description because I’d rather you go in blind. 5/5 stars. 

Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles #2) by Marissa Meyer: Finished February 1st. I read this as a piece of feminist fiction for Feminist Lit Feb. This was also a buddy read with Ellyn. I won’t give away any details because spoilers but I thought this book was good. I really didn’t care for the ending or how neatly everything came together. Overall, it was a solid second book. 4/5 stars. 

Double The Ache by Alexa Riley: Finished February 6th. Honestly, I just wanted something trashy and that’s exactly what I got. It was about two NFL players who share a woman and I still can’t believe I read it. Either way, it happened and I don’t even know how to feel. 1/5 stars.

Girl Squads by Sam Maggs: Finished February 7th. I read this to fulfill the challenge of reading a piece of feminist non-fiction for Feminist Lit Feb. This is a book all about mostly unknown girl squads who changed history. I think I only recognized 2 that she featured and I enjoyed this book. However, I had trouble getting into the story at first and it took me a while to get adjusted to her writing style so 3.5/5 stars.

One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia: Finished February 20th. I read this to fulfill the challenge of reading a book by a black woman. This is a middle-grade book that my mom read with her students and I loved it. It follows 3 sisters who visit their mother who abandoned them. It’s set during the 1968’s in Oakland and their mother is part of the Black Panther party and I loved it.

This book was pretty heavy despite being for kids. Even though it was a little over 200 pages, I grew to love the 3 sisters and their bond. If you’re looking for a good middle-grade to read, please add this to your TBR. 5/5 stars. 

A Princess In Theory (Reluctant Royals #1) by Alyssa Cole: Finished February 22nd. If you read my library holds post, you’ll know I had a hold on this and it came off early. I can’t believe I waited so long to read this book but it was such an adorable romance. I don’t want to talk too much about the plot but everything about this book sucked me in.

The romance felt natural. The smut was amazing and the main character, Ledi was an independent woman who had no problem checking Thabiso. For all the build-up, I think the resolution helped pretty quick and it threw the pacing off for me but it was still an enjoyable read. 4.5/5 stars.

Even though it doesn’t seem like much, I did read 6 books during the Contemporary-A-Thon and I’m currently in the middle of two. However, I did enjoy almost all of the books I read outside of the Contemporary-A-Thon. Easily my two favorites were A Princess in Theory and One Crazy Summer.
